Saying Goodbye to 2011
Happy last day of 2011 to you all! We're going to spend this morning taking the Christmas decorations down and putting our front room back together so we can start 2012 with things looking normal - or at least as normal as they are in our house.
2011 has been a great year for us. We love Wesley's school and have made some great new friends. I'm really looking forward to 2012 though.
In 2012 we should be done with diapers in our house after 6.5 years!!!
In 2012 Ryan will start preschool!
In 2012 we hope to take a family trip to Disney World
In 2012 our house will go back on the market - and maybe even sell this time.
In 2012 I get a gym membership through a new program at work and I'm actually going to try to use it.
In 2012 I will finish getting all the doctor checkups I need (I got all but one in during 2011)
In 2012 I get to spend another year married to the love of my life and the man who makes me the happiest woman in the world.
Here's to a great new year!

Got a Date
Wesley had a play date with his girlfriend C. today. It was kind of a big deal because now that they are at different schools, they don't see each other very often. In fact, the last time they saw each other was at C.'s Halloween party.
Wesley practically bounded out of bed this morning full of anticipation. Of course, then there was the question of what to wear for the big date. Wesley vetoed any button down down shirts, but insisted he wanted to look nice for C. He turned down a couple of his favorite school shirts before asking if he could wear one of his Sunday school shirts (long sleeved polos) because "I want to look handsome today." I think he looks handsome every day, but then again, I'm his mom.
We had another pre-date glitch when Wesley realized that we left the Christmas present he bought for C. At home. In true Wesley fashion he realized it after we had already arrived at Grandma and Grandpas and I getting ready to walk out their door for work. Poor little guy was near tears over the forgotten gift, but Grandma came to the rescue and ran him home to pick it up.
I had to miss the big date (Ryan acted as chaperone) but I hear it was a big success. They played at the play area of an ice cream place, had a little ice cream, and wrapped things up by visiting a pet store and petting the animals. The scary thing is, I think I've had a couple of dates just like that!

Whole Lot of Nothing
Sorry the blog has been quiet for a few days. There has been a whole lot of nothing going on in the W. household. Guess we all have a bit of post holiday let down. I'll do a real post as soon as something "blog worthy" happens.

Not Me Monday
Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to http://www.mycharmingkids.net/ to read what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.
I did not "permanently borrow" a stormtrooper ring that Wesley got from a birthday party. Not me.
I did not give Duane bad cooking advice, causing an entire pan of fudge to be ruined.
There is no way I walked around the kitchen with a honey glazed carrot stuck on my sock for twenty minutes before I realized it.
I did not act like a three year old and wake Duane up in the middle of the night because I had a bad dream. And the dream was not that I left the boys home alone while I went to the store. And I didn't carry a guilt complex about a silly dream the entire next day!
There is no way I used one of Ryan's sippy cups as a cocktail shaker.

Gingerbread House
The boys and I decorated the annual gingerbread house today. My brother's wife makes amazing gingerbread houses with her family. They even make the gingerbread from scratch! Someday I'll do that, but for now I take a more basic approach with the boys. We buy a kit with premade gingerbread, icing and candy included.
Wesley only wanted to put the candy on in certain patterns. Ryan wanted to eat the candy rather than decorate with it. Overall though, I think they did a pretty decent job. Please no comments on Mommy's sloppy icing work.

Big Heart
I have always said that Wesley is my sensitive boy. He feels things so very deeply is really empathetic for a six-year-old. I think that's one reason I love his school so much. Where else but a school like his could compassion and empathy really be a part of daily practice.
Last night Wesley came downstairs after his bath with such a sad look on his face.
"Mom," he said. "You probably already know this, but Fluffy and Sammi aren't real."
Fluffy and Sammi are imaginary animals that have beentormenting visiting us for years.
"I know that," I told him.
"Is it bad to pretend they are?" Wesley asked with his voice full of concern. "They want to be real."
I just melted then. And I immediately forgave all the annoying things Fluffy and Sammi do.
More evidence of Wesley's big heart took place this morning when I was on Facebook. I was reading through status updates and noticed that my twenty-something-year-old nephew's dog died. I said a sad, "Oh, no!" out loud and Wesley came rushing to the computer to see what was going on.
I told him that his cousin's dog had died and showed him pictures of the dog and his cousin (he doesn't see this cousin very often, so I wanted to make sure he knew who I was talking about)
"I am going to give him some of my allowance for his dog that died. He can get a new dog then if he wants."
I nearly cried. Really. What six-year-old thinks like that? I love that boy!

First Day of Vacation
Okay, so it's not MY first day of vacation, but it is Wesley's first day of Winter Break. We've had a pretty low day, which is probably the best way to spend the first day of vacation. After puttering around the house this morning, we took a little trip to the main library this afternoon.
We spent the some quiet time this afternoon watching Christmas shows.
So far it's been a nice, low stress day - just the way I like it!
There is a beautiful train display on the main floor of the library.
Ryan loved watching the trains zip around their tracks
Wesley liked the "I Spy" feature of the display and found all the hidden objects.
Even the giraffe in the children's department was dressed for the holidays

Dreaming of a White Christmas
Those of you who read this blog regularly know that I am not exactly a fan of snow. I despise driving in it. I hate bundling the kids up to go out in it. I hate digging out my car. If I had my way, it would snow between Christmas and New Year's and that's it.
However, I am not a child. Wesley and Ryan are DYING for snow. They ask about it every day. "When will it snow, Mom?" "Is it going to snow today?" "Why isn't it snowing yet?"
Yesterday I answered Ryan's incessant questioning about the weather by saying, "I don't know when it will snow, Ryan."
But I should have known that three-year-old's have an answer for everything. "It will snow on Christmas Eve!" I hope he's right, but I'm not counting on it.

Beginning to Feel Like Christmas
Last night the W. family headed out to the zoo to check out the lights. We didn't get to go last year, so I was extra determined to make room in our schedule this year. We decided to go right after Duane got off work, which put us at the zoo about 4:30. The timing was perfect! We were there before the crowds and when it started to get busy, we left and went out to dinner. LOVED IT!
There is just something about the zoo lights that puts me in a Christmas-y mood. I'm so glad we went.

The Music Must Speak to Him
Yesterday when we were running errands Ryan asked me to sing the song with the ducks in it. I drew a complete blank as to what he could be talking about. We've only been listening to Christmas music lately and I couldn't recall any Christmas songs featuring ducks.
"Which song do you mean?" I asked Ryan.
"The one with the ducks and the bird in the tree!" he answered.
Ducks and a bird in a tree? OH! The Twelve Days of Christmas. Apparently he must be hearing "two turtle ducks" instead of "turtle doves." Oops.
In other Christmas song news, the song "I'm Gettin Nuttin for Christmas" came on the radio and Ryan asked me to turn it up. He was totally rocking out to it and singing along. Of course, a short time later, he greeted Wesley after school by kicking him in the shins. Guess he took that song to heart.

Not to Rub It In
I'm on vacation this week. WHOO-HOO!!! No work until the 27th. To be honest, I'm not sure who is more excited about that - me or Ryan. He is so happy he'll get to stay with Mommy.
The best part about being on vacation this week? I'm ready for Christmas! The baking is done. The wrapping is done (well, except for Duane's stuff which I can do any day this week). Christmas parties are done! It's a cakewalk from here on out.
I think we're going to try and go to the zoo lights tonight. I'd like to take the boys to see the train display at the Main Library this week. We may make a gingerbread house. But there's really nothing that HAS to be done. I really just want to try and enjoy the anticipation of Christmas with the boys.

Not Me Monday
I did not justify a bakery run by saying I had an 7:45 staff meeting and I could not function through it without pastry.
I did not spend a day off helping with a holiday store at Wesley's school. And even if I, I know I wasn't more excited about it than he was.
I did not eat a healthy dinner one night, only to pig out on chorizo cheese fries at an event less than 2 hours later. Talk about defeating the purpose.
I was not flattered when I woman I was helping at the library kept complimenting my eyes, even though she was one of those "quirky" patrons that we get.

Holiday Festival
We decided to try something new for the family tonight. The relatively new downtown park was having a holiday fair so we decided to check it out.
The park was all lit up with lights and there were plenty of activities for the kids. Ryan loved the giant slide and both boys loved the bounce house. We ate french fries, did some secret Santa shopping, rode the "train", checked out the petting zoo and saw the decorated windows in the buildings. We left before the fireworks because the boys were getting cold and whiny and Ryan had spilled an entire cup of hot chocolate on my jeans. Yuck. Still, it was fun!

Short Stories
On the way home tonight I was telling the boys about an event we are going to tomorrow night. There is supposed to be a petting zoo at the festival and I figured they'd be pretty excited about it. Ryan immediately asked, "Will they have a platypus?" Maybe it's time to cut back on Phineas and Ferb.

Tonight I was indulging my need for holiday movies by watching the original "Miracle on 34th St." Wesley came into the room during the scene where Kris Kringle sings a good night song to Susan and she teaches him how to blow bubbles with gum. Wesley watched for a minute, then said, "She's pretty cute!" Young Natalie Wood? My boy has good taste.

A Christmas Wish
Do you ever wish you could recapture the magic that Christmas seemed to hold when you were a child? Sometimes I feel like I do all these "things" trying to make Christmas seem like Christmas did back then, but it's still not like I remember.
When I was little, we would get dressed up and go to the downtown Lazarus to have breakfast with Santa Claus. I don't know if we did it every year, but in my mind we did. I know that's why I try to make sure my kids have a breakfast with Santa experience every year. Of course, they are missing out on the amazing "Santa land" that Lazarus used to have where you had to make your way through displays of lights and movable creatures (almost animatronic) before getting to see Santa for yourself. I have a picture of me & my brother (or, as he got older) just me until I was in 5th grade. Oh! And after seeing Santa you had to go see Mr. Tree in the children's department! I tried Google images to find some pictures of these things, but I couldn't and it darn near broke my heart.
Lazarus also had those great department store windows that you just don't see very often anymore. It was always so exciting to see how they were decorated each year! This year, the old Lazarus building is supposed to have it's windows decorated again and we are definitely going to check it out.
We always had advent calendars growing up too - although never the chocolate kind. My neighbor Kris, whose parents were from Europe, always seemed to have the chocolate ones and I was so jealous - which is totally why my kids get the chocolate ones now. I have to admit, I love watching Wesley and Ryan race downstairs in the morning to open their Advent calendars, pop the chocolate in their mouths and see how many more days there are until Christmas.
Duane and I have two different Nativity scenes in our house. One is a Fisher Price one for play and the other is a ceramic one for display. They are both nice, but when I was growing up, the one we had seemed so special. My parents always let me play with it and I think it was one of my favorite things about Christmas. Wesley and Ryan both play with it some at Grandma H.'s but I don't think they are nearly as obsessed with it as I was.
Speaking of obsessed...growing up we had a white ceramic Christmas tree with different colored lights on it sitting near our front door - very much like this one.
Ours didn't have a star on the top. I don't know if it never had one, or if Kirk and I managed to lose it, but he and I had an ongoing battle over which color light should be on the top of it. Every time one of us would walk by it, we'd change the color to the one we liked best, only to find the other person changed it back later!
The elementary school we attended did something kind of different the week before Christmas break too. Our school had this huge main staircase - it was actually two staircases that wrapped around and became one on the second floor. It was gorgeous. All the classes would file into the hallway and up the staircases in the mornings leading up to Christmas and sing Christmas carols to piano accompaniment. One of our teachers even wrote a song called "Candy Canes and Stockings" that was about the neighborhood our school was in. After singing, the classes would be dismissed and we would all hum "Silent Night" as we made our way back to our rooms. Wesley's school doesn't do anything like that, but it is awfully fun to hear Wesley and Ryan sing Christmas carols around the house.
Duane and I have an artificial, pre-lit tree that I love, but I do kind of miss the tradition of the family going out to breakfast and then to a Christmas tree farm to find the perfect tree. My dad would cut it down and then he would drag it back to the car with "help" from me and my brother. I have to admit though, while I miss the smell of a fresh tree, I do not miss the prickly needles!
My parents always put lights outside our house. I have memories of blue lights in our front bushes and even though white lights are my favorite now, I still have a warm and fuzzy place in my heart for blue lights. We don't decorate the outside of our house, although Wesley really wants us to. I usually pull into the back of the house, but tonight I had to park in front and I noticed that only two houses on our block were decorated with lights. It made me a little sad. Maybe we'll have to rethink decorating the front for next year.
I remember watching the sky so closely on Christmas Eve, that I would be able to see Rudolph's nose in the sky on the way home from church. The radio would broadcast "Santa Sightings." Do they still do that?
The house I grew up in had a basement family room. When Kirk and I were pretty little, our parents would use an old hook like latch on the door to keep us from going downstairs and getting into things too early in the morning. And the family rule was that you had to have something in your stomach before going downstairs - even if was just orange juice.
I think one of the hardest things about Christmas for me as a parent has been the fact that we aren't really home on Christmas day. We are so blessed to have all of our family nearby and to be on good terms with them, but can be hard (at least on me) to be running around on Christmas. When I was little my grandparents always came to our house on Christmas Day (Kirk and I were the youngest grandchildren on both sides and lived only about an hour away). I remember waiting anxiously for the to arrive so I could show them all the gifts Santa brought. Of course, now I realize that they probably knew the whole time what the jolly old elf would bring. Luckily, the boys don't seem to mind visiting everyone on Christmas day. They have never complained or asked to stay home, it's just that it's so different from what I grew up with.
And still, I see their eyes light up with anticipation for Christmas. Tonight Ryan was on the couch looking at the Christmas tree and told me he "Christmas is the best. Not Halloween. Christmas!" I guess that means we must be making sure they have their own magical memories of the holiday.

Not Quite Right
Aunt Carol got the boys big magnetic playsets recently. Ryan's is a fire station and Wesley's is Noah's Ark. Wesley is really into Christmas though and when he conned Grandpa into playing with him yesterday he held out the pieces of Noah and his wife and asked, "Do you want to be Joseph or Mary?"
Wesley isn't the only one who is a little confused about stories this week. Ryan pulled this book off the shelf and asked Wesley to read it to him.
Of course, Ryan called it "Bad Kitty EATS the Baby." That would be a totally different story.

Not Me Monday
Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama. You can head over to http://www.mycharmingkids.net/ to read
what she and everyone else have not been doing this week.
I did not have to tell my oldest son to back off and quit following Santa around.
Nor did I have to tell Wesley that a story about how his grandpa used to spank his uncle was not appropriate for show and tell.
I did not tell Wesley to quit tattling on his brother and just hit Ryan back. And I know I didn't say it on a Sunday morning.

The Cookies Are Done!
YAY! The Christmas cookies for 2011 are officially done! My mom and I usually do a marathon day of baking, but this year we broke up the baking into two afternoons. MUCH less stressful and MUCH more enjoyable!
Of course part of the ease today was that Duane took Wesley with him to run some errands, leaving only Ryan to hang out and help me and Grandma. He played on the computer for a big chunk of the time, but when he decided to help, it was actually helpful. Imagine that!
When Duane and Wesley got back, it was time for the guys to decorate the cut out cookies. I HATE decorating cut out cookies. Luckily, Duane doesn't mind it and he's really really good at it.
Of course, Wesley and Ryan wanted to try their hand at decorating too.
So, the baking is done. In theory. That means the "must have" cookies are made and cookie plates can be assembled. However, I am off the week of Christmas and there may be some truffles and fudge appearing in the kitchen. Hey, I'll have to keep myself busy somehow!

Ryan rolled the peanut butter dough balls in sugar and placed them very carefully on the cookie sheet.
He unwrapped the kisses for the peanut blossoms and didn't sneak a single one! I'm not even sure I have that kind of will power.
Ryan helped me break up white chocolate so it would melt easier.

Ryan pretty much ate the icing. BTW - red buttercream stains cheeks.

Breakfast with Santa
This morning my mom took the boys and I to have breakfast with Santa that the conservatory near our house. They do such a beautiful job with it, and the boys were really well behaved.
Me with the guys. For some reason, Ryan thinks that is his "nice" smile
Nothing like hot chocolate rimmed in white chocolate and crushed candy canes
Looks good!
Bacon and cinnamon rolls for Ryan's breakfast
