Best Part of the Day

I guess I had a little case of the Mondays today. I kind of felt flat and tired all day long. Luckily for me, the best part of the day comes at about 6:15 on Mondays. Wesley and I walked in the door tonight to find dinner waiting for both of us. Duane fed Wesley while I ate, then I took over while Duane ate. Then it was PLAYTIME!!!!! Wesley had been staring at his exersaucer for awhile so we gave in and put him in it. Oh the joy! His new trick is to press the buttons to make the music play. What cracks me up is that when Duane or I start singing along, he smiles and laughs like we are the most wonderful people in the world for knowing the songs! We also had tickle time on the floor (you don't even have to tickle him - just pretend to and he'll laugh) and some time in the Jumperoo. Bedtime for Wesley came too quickly for me tonight. I could have used some more playtime with the boys. Now I just have to try and stay awake for my new show to come on.

Bouncing, Baths, Bananas, Birthdays

It's the four "B's" of Wesley's weekend! The first "B" is for bouncing. Our friends Chris and Ciera have a little girl named Caitlyn who was born 11 days before Wesley. They have just been raving about the Jumperoo they have for her. Apparently Caitlyn is content to bounce all day long. Well, we finally broke down and got one for Wesley. He LOVES it! It didn't take him any time at all to figure out what to do with it and he gets the biggest grin when he really gets going (see picture) Definitely worth the money spent!

The second "B" is for baths. You know we are new parents when we consider Wesley's bathtime entertainment appropriate to share with family and friends. Wesley showed off his water baby skills to Aunt Susan twice this weekend and to Grandpa and Grandma P. It's just so funny to see him get wound up about getting in the tub and watch him splash and splash around. Just be warned, if you come to visit us in the evening, we may subject you to tubby-time too!

The next "B" is for bananas. Wesley got his first taste of fruit today. I think I was hoping for a bigger reaction. He wasn't really sure what to make of the bananas, but it didn't keep him from gobbling down his breakfast. I think he'll really start to dig them in a day or two, it was probably just strange to him. Until today the sweetest thing he's had has been sweet potatoes.

The final "B" is for birthdays. Tonight we celebrated my dad's birthday, my stepmom's birthday and Wesley's 5 month birthday. We had folks down to our house for dinner. I love to entertain and spent all week planning the menu. I think I probably enjoyed it more than anyone else - including the birthday guests! It was just the thing to perk me up! Wesley provided the entertainment by bouncing, exersaucering (is that a word?), and generally being his sweet self. Gotta love that kid!

Recharged!

I know my last post sounded really stressed out. I want you to know that I'm feeling so much better now! Duane and I had a great time out last night and I got to sleep in this morning. It was such a treat to have an uninterrupted night of slumber and to wake up to the sound of my cat purring instead of the baby monitor going off. I got to read the paper in bed, drink my coffee without having to be super careful that Wesley didn't try to grab it, and take a long shower. I even had time to blow dry my hair for once. Don't get me wrong, I called my mom to check on Wesley last night and as soon as I woke up this morning, but I knew he was in good hands.

My mom and I also discovered a wonderful invention while we were out running errands today. We found a teether that vibrates when the baby chews on it. Wesley LOVES it and massaged his little gums all afternoon! I'm so glad we found something that makes him happy to chew on - especially since I think he's too young for biter biscuits. I looked at half a dozen different kinds today and they all said they were for infants who can sit up and who are eating solid food. Not quite there yet.

Duane and Wesley spent some time after dinner reading books on the floor. Wesley has a new favorite "Where is My Baby?" by Harriet Ziefert. Very cute!

The Week That Will Not End

OK, so I know we've all had "those weeks," but this one has been the week that will not end! Let me recap
  1. Saturday: 2 puppet shows at work (which are fun, but VERY draining)
  2. Sunday: fight with the hubby, make-up, go to church, go to work.
  3. Monday: leave house extra early to take Wesley to Grandparents, work a full day, add an hour to commute to pick Wesley up and drive home. Totally worth it!
  4. Tuesday: emergency vet visit, work.
  5. Wednesday: Wesley wakes up at 5:00 AM and does not go back to sleep after his bottle. By7:30 is so cranky he can't stand himself. I worked a split shift (9-1 & 6-9) to accommodate programs and made the mistake of wearing uncomfortable shoes.

Which brings us to today. Wesley woke up at 1:00 for a bottle. That's unusual, but we figured he'd eat and go back to sleep. No such luck! At 2:00 I brought him into our room. He did quit crying, but he started screaming like a banshee instead. I only have to work half a day today and don't go in until 2:00, so took Wesley downstairs and thought I'd sleep on the couch with him. After another bottle, he was still awake and crying. I think we finally fell asleep around 3:00 - if you want to call it sleep. Poor little guy woke up every hour crying. I'd stroke his forehead and talk softly to him and he'd fall asleep again, only to repeat the cycle an hour later.

I am starting to wonder if he is beginning to teethe. He was really biting (hard) on my fingers in the wee hours of the morning and felt a little warm to the touch. Nothing would soothe him. And once again he is so cranky he can hardly stand himself. He's sitting on my lap now, and I am hoping that he'll fall asleep for his morning nap any minute. Of course, the way he's biting my wrist, there are no guarantees.

Maybe I should feel guilty that he's spending the night at his Grandma and Grandpa H.'s house tonight. Two bad nights in a row does not bode well for them. The truth is, I don't feel guilty at all! I am super excited to be going out with Duane tonight! I am just as excited to know I will get a real night's sleep and be able to sleep in tomorrow morning. When I pick Wesley up in the morning I'll be refreshed, hopefully he'll be refreshed and we'll have a wonderful day together. But I'm packing the ora-gel andTylenol just in case!

Complicated New Life

I knew becoming a mommy would be filled with joy, hard times and complications, but there are a few things I never thought about.
  1. Staying a little late/going in a little early to work has taken on a whole new complexity. Now I have to arrange things with whomever Wesley is staying with that day It's extra tough because I really enjoy my job and when there are things that need my time, I still want to do them.
  2. Eating! I realized yesterday how many of my meals are eaten on the run in my car. At least one meal a day is eaten at the "Cafe Hyundai" My car is littered with wrappers from nutrition bars, bits of cereal (eaten dry - I'm not that crazy), empty chip and snack bags and assorted diet soda cans. It would be really easy to give in to the temptation of fast food every day, but being a librarian doesn't pay that much! :-) Although sometimes it takes all my willpower to pass a Wendy's/Panera/Cosi/McDonalds when I'm eating yet another Slim Fast bar.
  3. What happens when one of my other "children" needs me? This morning Sanders (my soul-mate kitty) woke up with one side of his face swollen and his eye not quite open all the way. I did the appropriate things by slightly freaking out and calling Duane at work, before calling the vet. Sanders has an appointment later this morning so.......I called my mom (who lives close to the vet and is watching Wesley today) and she agreed to take Sanders back home after his appointment so I don't have to run the opposite direction home before going in to work. BTW - I have the best mom in the entire world. Seriously, the woman is an angel!

My new morning schedule (before going to work at 1:00) is : feed Wesley, shower and get myself ready, get Wesley ready, pack my work bag and dinner, put Sanders in the cat carrier, drive to the vet (stopping at my mom's to drop off Wesley if she is done with her appointment), get my kitty taken care of, drive to my mom's again and drop Sanders off, and eat a lunch of a Slim Fast bar washed down with a diet soda while driving to work to put in a "full day" Ahhh.. the life of a parent!

Baby Talk

It amazes me that a baby who isn't quite 5 months old yet can communicate so well. When I picked Wesley up from his grandparent's today he looked at me and smiled. I said "Hi Baby!" and he responded by screeching very very loudly, but I am certain it was his way of saying an excited "Hi Mommy!" He did the same thing as we were leaving. My dad was saying goodbye through the window and waving. Wesley looked at him, smiled and screeched - translated as "Bye Grandpa!" Wesley will carry on a conversation with us and his stuffed animals too. It's so funny to watch him "talk" to his bear - deafening, but funny!

Splish-Splash Wesley

Wesley got two treats today. First, I brought home lots of brand new board books from the library. For those of you who may not work in the library, it's important to know that only NEW board books should be checked out because after a few circs. they become nasty!!! If I feel compelled to check out an older board book, I wipe the whole thing down with disinfecting wipes first. Trust me, it's a necessary step.

His other treat was a bath in his tubby. Yes, baths are a requirement for drooling babies, but Wesley LOVES bathtime! Duane and I have talked about it so much that we invited Grandma H. down to experience bathtime for herself. She just couldn't get over it. Wesley starts to get very excited when he first hears the bath water running. His little feet start kicking and he starts to smile very big. By the time we're undressing him, he's doing a full blown happy baby dance. Once he is in the tub he kicks and kicks and kicks until we are soaked. He just loves it! I can't wait to take him in a pool this summer. I keep thinking about signing him up for baby swim classes at the university, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. If Wesley keeps up his water baby tendencies, I won't be able to wait for long!

Today's post by Duane

Daddy Blog: Version 1.0

Tired…So tired. Had boy many hours. Walked, played, read, squealed, ate, did tummy-time, sang, giggled, danced…and that was the first fifteen minutes.

Seriously though, I got to spend the entire day with Wesley because Heather worked all day, and I was off. First, we went to the store, where the cashier looked into the car seat and said, “I remember you. You’re that smiley, happy baby.” Then we did a lot of laundry, and we (and by we, I mean he) took naps. We did everything on the above list probably a half-dozen times each, although his tummy-time was self-inflicted…and I loved every minute of it. And then when Heather came home, we double-teamed him so that he was laughing so hard we had to let him catch his breath. I guess we wore him out. He went straight to sleep after his bottle, and we haven’t heard a peep. I thought since I had him all day I should take a stab at blogging. Anyway, hope it wasn’t too bad, and as Wesley would say, “AACHL-PPPBTHHEEHEE,” (followed by a loud smiley, squeal) I think that’s baby for “Wait until tomorrow.”

With the exception of my wife, I love that boy more than anything. I’m glad Heather decided to blog, because writing about something you love that much is easy. Goofy, but easy.

I Can Do It!

Today's post has one title, but it fits me and Wesley! We'll start with Wesley, or should I call him "Little Mr. Big Boy?" I had no idea that infants could show so much independence. Wesley is bound and determined that he can do things by himself. He's starting to get the hang of holding the bottle, but he thinks he can use the spoon and feed himself his dinner too. I usually give it to him after he's done eating and he does do a pretty good job (if I do say so myself!) He also tries very hard to hold his books when you are reading to him. It could be the librarian in me, but I am positive he tries to turn the pages.

Tonight he also figured out the turtle toy he got for Christmas from Grandma W. When you press on the turtle's head, the back lights up, spins around and plays music. Wesley did it over and over for about 5 minutes. I was quite impressed. He's still working on sitting up, but at least he has managed to capture the long elusive toes.

Now for how the title of tonight's post applies to me. Believe it or not, this is the first time I have ever put Wesley to bed by myself. Seriously. I usually have Duane (a.k.a. Super Daddy) here with me and he tends to take charge of the nighttime routine. We even joke that it's Mommy in the morning and Daddy at night because I get Wesley ready for the day and drop him off wherever he staying that day. Duane picks him up on the nights I work and gets Wesley to bed. Wesley seems to know this routine, because if we are both home on the weekend he still wants me in the morning and Duane at night.

Overall I think tonight went pretty well. Duane and Susan (our sister-in-law) went to a hockey game. While they've been gone I finished feeding the boy and got him all cleaned up. Wesley and I read some books, played with his turtle and gumball machine (Fisher Price baby toy), and had a little tummy time on the gym. Wesley played in his exersaucer while I put his laundry away and we chatted. He had a bath, a bedtime bottle and went right to sleep at 8:00. I even got the dishes done! I know that probably doesn't seem like a big deal to more experienced parents, but it's a HUGE deal to me! Just like Wesley "I can do it!"

The Best and Worst Day of the Week

Tuesdays are one of the days that I do a late shift (1-9) at the library. Before Wesley, I used to love my mornings before I went in at 1:00 because I got so much done. I would do laundry, straighten up, catch up on the morning talk shows, but that was B.W. Now Tuesdays (or any day I work late) are my best and worst day all rolled into one.

The good part? Well, I get a morning with my boy! We play and snuggle and get some time when it's just the two of us. This morning we got up and played and then took a LONG nap together on the couch with Sanders. I don't know how long I'll have the luxury of Wesley actually wanting to be held and cuddled so I plan on taking advantage of it. I take him to Melissa's before heading to work and he gets the whole afternoon with his aunt, cousins and uncle (when he is home from work.) Duane picks him up from Melissa's those nights, so Duane gets one on one time with the boy too. That's all good, right?

Then there's the downside. I have to get ready to go to work during some of our morning time and Wesley does not like that. Today he sat in his bouncy chair and screamed while I was in the shower. I kept popping my head out to see what was wrong and he'd just grin at me. Stinker! The worst part is that by the time I get home from work, Wesley is sound asleep. I hate that I don't see him in the evenings. OK, I do peek in on him, but it hardly counts. I get minimal time with Duane too because I am zonked by the time I get home and usually have less than an hour on consciousness. I don't mean to complain because I know how very blessed we are to have family that loves Wesley and wants to watch him and that I have a job I love. I just need to keep reminding myself of that on Tuesdays.

Party #2

Today was birthday party number 2 this weekend. We celebrated Susan's (my brother's wife) birthday at my mom's house. Wesley was very excited to be hanging out at Grandma and Grandpa H.'s house. It's practically his second home since he spends several days a week there. Grandma H. has a bunch of toys for him, loves to cuddle him and he even has his own room there. Come on, what more could a baby ask for?

Wesley used Susan's birthday as an excuse to show everyone what a very big boy he is. Did he sit nicely in his highchair while we all ate dinner? Of course not! He wanted to sit on Mommy's lap. That's OK, since I'm becoming fairly adept at eating with a baby on my lap. However, tonight Wesley was accutely interested in everything on the table and especially on my plate. I finally gave him a green bean to hold, but the green bean I handed him was not possibly as wonderful as the green beans on my plate. And my fork! Well, that's a big shiney thing that Wesley just had to try and get his little hands on. We managed well enough, but after the big people ate, the real entertainment began.

Wesley had to have his dinner too. We pulled his high chair up to the table and proceeded to show everyone what a great eater Wesley has become. He put away a decent sized helping of rice cereal mixed with green beans and a helping of rice cereal and sweet potatoes. Wesley is just like a baby bird now; he sees the food on the spoon and opens his mouth super wide to get it. I don't think Grandma and Grandpa or Uncle Kirk and Aunt Susan expected such a show. When Wesley first popped that mouth open, the table burst into laughter! Of course, half of us all opened our mouths right along with him for each bite! He probably thinks we're big dorks, but it sure kept us smiling!

Party!!!

Today was a birthday party for Duane's grandma. She is turning 91, so a bunch of the family got together and went out to eat to celebrate. I still can't get over how good Wesley was! First we drove about 1/2 hour to Grandma W.'s house (that's Duane's mom who is in the picture with Wesley.) We were there long enough for the little guy to cuddle up to grandma for awhile and down a bottle before climbing back in the car and driving about 1/2 hour further to the restaurant. I rode in back with Wesley so Doug could ride with us. I'm not sure Wesley knew what to think about sharing the backseat with someone. He usually falls asleep almost instantly in the car, but he couldn't take his eyes off me. It must have taken him half the trip to the restaurant to finally doze off.

I was under the mistaken impression that we could put Wesley in a high chair while Duane and I got our food and ate. We've been practicing in the high chair at home and he does really well. No such luck today! As soon as we put him in the high chair (after I did the new mom thing and wiped it down with Clorox wipes) he screamed! So we played pass the baby while eating. I held him, Duane held him, Aunt Melissa held him. As long as someone was holding him he did just fine. Most of the time he was too busy making eyes at folks to fuss. Great-Grandma was the primary target for Wesley's charms today. Every time Duane took Wesley over to see her he would giggle and "talk" and just smile, smile, smile. Several people told me how good and happy was Wesley was - they should see him when it's time for that 5:00 AM bottle! Actually, he is a very good baby and we know we're lucky!

I think the debate over who Wesley looks like was decided today too. My mom has always said he looks like me, and that's what I've thought too. Today three people from Duane's family said that Wesley looked "just like his mommy." Guess that answers that. But here's what I want to know. Everyone says he looks like me, but they also say he really looks like a boy, so...exactly what are they trying to say? :-)

Library Baby

Wesley had his first babytime experience today. Babytime is a storytime at the library for 6-24 month babies. I know Wesley isn't 6 months yet, but that's one of the perks of mommy being a librarian. His Grandma H. brought him to the program and since it wasn't busy at the desk, I got to sit with them. Wesley was only in there for about 15 minutes, but he had a good time. We bounced and sang and looked at the other babies. There's a big dog puppet named Ralph who visits all the babies during the program and Wesley even managed to grab Ralph without trying to gum him. Quite impressive these days.

After Wesley was done at storytime he had to make the rounds at the library. He visited the circulation department and checked out all the equipment on the desk. He went to my supervisor's office and grinned at her and her officemate for awhile. He went to the fiction department and flirted with his girlfriend, Wendy. Wendy is another librarian I work with. She's going to become an aunt for the first time soon and Wesley is completely in love with her. He grins and giggles at her everytime he sees her. Need further proof of his devotion? She is the only person at the library whose finger he tried to eat today. Now that's baby love!

Baby Quest

Like the character from The Princess Bride that he shares his name with, Wesley has begun an epic quest. It may not be fraught with danger, or take him to the far corners of the earth, but he has that baby look of determination of his face. I can tell he will not rest until he reaches his goal. What goal is that? To get his feet into his mouth!
Wesley re-discovered his feet this morning and he can't wait to get a taste. He has tried folding himself in half from a sitting position, but he isn't quite flexible enough to get those toes. No problem. Wesley just switched to plan B - lying on his back and trying to pull the toes to his mouth. Unfortunately this isn't working well either. Oh well, I'm sure he'll come up with something that will work for him. The toes just look too yummy to resist.

Chow Hound

I don't know what Grandma and Grandpa P. did to Wesley on Friday, but ever since leaving their house he has been a certified chow hound! He's eating pretty big bottles (although we still haven't hit six ounces) all the time! It seems like if he is awake, he wants to be eating. I guess we'll chalk it up to another growth spurt.

Of course, Wesley can't eat all the time. When he doesn't have a bottle in his mouth, he's got something else in there. His new favorite thing to "eat" is his bib which we've starting making him wear all the time because he is the drooliest thing I've ever seen. But his snacks aren't limited to clothing. Today he chomped on the bulletin at church, his fingers, his toys, Mommy and Daddy's fingers, and even tried to gum Sanders' ear (Sanders is one of our cats and by far the most good natured of the three). Wesley tried to get Regan's (a 10 month old at church) fingers in his mouth during the passing of the peace, but she was too quick for him. While I am typing this, he's sitting on my lap and gumming the computer desk.

You'd think we never feed this kid. We broke in his new highchair about an hour ago with an incredibly appetizing mixture of rice cereal and sweet potatoes. Wesley really liked it and for the first time he may have swallowed more food than ended up on his bib. Way to go kiddo!

2+2= Soon to be Mobile Baby

Wesley has been able to roll from his tummy to his back (when he remembers) for almost two months now. In the last week he discovered he can roll from his back to his tummy. Now for someone who hates tummy time, he does this an awful lot! He's even taken to sleeping on his side and tummy, which stresses me out some nights. Anyhow, this morning he rolled onto his tummy, then back to his back two times. It's like he suddenly realized that he can do both! As soon as he figures out that he can do it repeatedly and actually move, Duane and I are in BIG trouble!

Visiting Grandma and Grandpa P.

Wesley had a special treat today - he got to spend the whole day with his Grandma and Grandpa P. They live on the other side of town, so we don't get to see them nearly as often as we'd like. Thankfully they were able to watch him today since our regular Friday arrangement was unavailable.

I suppose I should explain Wesley's relationship with his Grandpa P. My dad was the second person to hold Wesley after he was born (after me). I know brand new babies don't smile, but I am POSITIVE that Wesley smiled at him. Ever since that first day they just seem to have a special bond.

Grandpa was waiting at the door when we arrived. I walked in with the car seat and Wesley had his blanket pulled up to his chin. As soon as he saw his grandpa he grinned so big. Of course, my dad was wearing the "Grandpas Rock" shirt that Wesley got him for Christmas so maybe he was just glad his present was being put to good use! :-) Anyhow, my dad sat down on the floor with us and I could tell that he was just dying for me to get the little guy out of the seat. I had to wait a few minutes so Abby and Maggie (the dogs Dad and Lynne watch) could check Wesley over good and proper. Apparently I didn't bathe Wesley to Maggie's specifications because she made quite sure his face was clean, especially behind the ears.

I wish I could've stayed with them all day, but I know Grandma and Grandpa had a great time with their youngest grandson while I was at work. When Duane picked Wesley up, my dad told him that we were going to have a wild one on our hands. A real Wild Wild Wes! I guess it's a little ironic that he was so good for them today. He ate a couple of 6 ounce bottles, which he never does at home, and took a two and a half hour nap. Thank goodness for grandparents!

In a Daze

This is going to be a short post because 1) I already typed it in a fun, witty way and lost it before I got it posted, and 2) I am sleep deprived and too tired to try and recreate what I wrote before!

Wesley decided to shake things up with his bedtime routine last night. Instead of sleeping sweetly by 8:30, he decided to experience the night life and stay up (and crank) until 11:00. At 3:30 he ever so politely asked for a bottle (read - screamed his head off) and decided he was going to fuss for the next hour unless I held him. Since I get up at 5:45 and had to leave the house an hour early today, I gave up trying to put him in his crib. He ended up in bed with me and Duane at about 4:30.

Of course, little boys and puppies are cute for a reason. Part of me was annoyed by losing precious sleep before a meeting. Wesley must have sensed that because as soon as he was in our bed he gave me the biggest, sweetest smile I've ever seen. He was quiet and spent a few minutes playing with my face and hair before falling asleep until 6:30. You just can't be annoyed when he's that cute. The little stinker!!

Cereal Baby

We started Wesley on rice cereal late last week. The verdict? He hates it. I can't really blame him. The stuff looks and smells suspiciously like wallpaper paste. I almost feel guilty feeding it to him. At least I know a lot of babies that have hated it - my niece, the children of several co-workers, another friend's son. Two people told me today that their kids disliked it so much that they started to mix it with other baby food. We aren't to that point yet. It's really cute to watch Duane feeding Wesley. I never pictured Duane as a "make airplane noises" kind of guy, but what ever works! As you can see, most of the cereal still ends up on his bib and chin. I'm not sure any of the food is actually swallowed, but practice makes perfect.

Welcome James!
Rusty and Katie, who are very good friends of ours, had their baby on December 31, 2005 at roughly 6:30 AM. Now that's a tax return baby! Duane and I dropped by the hospital for a brief visit, but didn't stay long or get too close since I was fighting a cold. The three of them came to our house a few days later to watch the Fiesta Bowl and I got to hold James for awhile. I could not get over how little he was. He weighs less than Wesley did when he was released to come home. It was like holding a feather.
To be honest, I have a hard time remembering Wesley as a tiny little guy like that. He's been the youngest of my friends babies (until now). James' cry sounded more like a squeak or a mew and Wesley can definite cause hearing loss when he's upset. When I think of everything Wesley can do and is trying to do now it just blows my mind. He smiles and laughs. He grabs things and puts them straight into his mouth. He can roll from his tummy to his back (when he remembers) and just this week has learned how to roll from his back to his tummy. He's trying so hard to sit up too! If I prop him most of the way up on pillows, he'll actually sit up and then topple over. I guess I didn't realize how big he's gotten in four months until I had someone to compare him to. Sigh. I didn't think I'd be saying that so soon!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

I have been inspired by my friend Kate to start a blog of my own this year. I'm hoping to be able to add to it daily so everyone can keep up to date on life in the Webb household.
We spent our first New Year's Eve as a family at home. I was sick with an icky cold and Wesley (at 4 months) wasn't really up to partying either. Duane and I were in bed by 9:30. When the new year hit the whole neighborhood exploded with sound! There were fireworks, drums being played, folks shouting "Happy New Year!" and horns honking. I woke up long enough to wish Duane a happy new year and went right back to sleep. Thank goodness Wesley stayed asleep!

Us
