Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I did not permit Ryan to stay up past his summer bedtime (which is a full hour later than the school year bedtime) just because he wanted to read in bed. And I certainly didn't encourage this behavior by letting him take my special reading light in his room.

I know I didn't sit down at my desktop computer at home and spend several moments looking for the icons to launch the library catalog and the inter-library IM program we use at work.

I certainly did not force my children to eat lunch at Chipotle (which they hate) because I wanted it and they each had a coupon for a free kids meal. And even if I did, I certainly didn't help myself to their chips and salsa after eating my salad.

I did not purchase a pie for an evening some friends were coming over, only to eat the pie the night BEFORE they came over, resulting in me having to buy another pie.

Weekend Review

Our weekend in a nutshell? A whole lot of not much and a whole lot of relaxing!

Saturday morning we went to a local farmer's market which Wesley really enjoyed and Ryan really didn't. The important thing though is that I enjoyed it and bought some wonderful stuff. After the market we popped into the library to get some books.  My library currently has monarch caterpillars and Ryan was fascinated by them.

We did our weekly grocery shopping, then did a whole bunch of nothing in particular.

My nothing in particular consisted of sitting on the patio looking at this

and reading this
Kirk and Susan came over for a casual dinner, then we took the boys to the park for awhile.

Today our day has consisted of church and set up for VBS, which starts tomorrow. We're going to have one of my favorite summer dinners tonight and then watch a show on tv with friends. Not a bad weekend at all.

That Explains the Boy Smell

Tonight I headed upstairs to put something away just as Ryan was coming out of the bathroom after his shower. Unlike most nights, Ryan was carrying the dirty clothes he had been wearing prior to bathing.

"Good job remembering your dirty clothes," I told him. "Now don't forget to put your towel in the laundry too."

"Oh, I didn't have a towel," Ryan replied.

I stopped dead in my tracks. "What do you mean you didn't have a towel?"

Duane called out, "What did you use to dry off?"

Ryan proudly held up his dirty clothes and answered, "I just used these!"

Growing Pains

Wesley has been complaining over the last day or two, saying that his knee hurts. He didn't bump it, or scrape it, or do anything to it that he remembers or that I can see.

"Must be growing pains" I told him. When I was his age my knee used to ache terribly sometimes - usually right around a growth spurt. "You're growing, which means your bones are growing too. That can hurt a little."

"A little?!?" he cried indignantly. "This hurts a lot!"

"You're right," I said, remembering how uncomfortable they were. "They hurt a lot."

I didn't think too much about our conversation - or that fact that Ryan overheard the whole thing - until Ryan was snuggling with me for a few minutes before bed.

"Mom, I have something to tell you," he said seriously.

"What's that?"

"My neck kind of hurts right now. I think I have one of those growing bones in it."

Good thing it was nothing a quick neck rub couldn't fix.

Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I was not seriously tempted to use ice cream base as creamer in my coffee one morning. And even if I was tempted, there's no way the only thing that held me back was the fact that the base contained raw eggs.

I did not come very close to accidentally brushing my hair with Wesley's toothbrush instead of my hairbrush one morning.

During the course of the weekend I did not completely blow any kind of healthy eating kick I may have been on. And even if I did, it certainly wasn't totally worth it!

Holiday Weekend Day Two

Today we (along with half the city) spent the day at the zoo. Unlike most times we go to the zoo, I decided this was going to be a "yes" day and Duane and I said yes to the kids as much as possible. We rode rides, ate junk, and just tried to enjoy being together as a family.

Ryan and I took a camel ride

Play that funky music!

NOT a view I want to get used to!

Bumper car time!

Ryan gearing up for his first ride on a real roller coaster

Ride #2 on the coaster was in the front row with Daddy.

Ride #3 was a hands up affair with Mommy
After spending a good six hours at the zoo, we went to lamb roast at a friend's house, where we laughed, ate too much and just had an all around good time. Guess who is going to crash hard tonight? Hint: it won't be one of the boys.

Holiday Weekend Day One - Happy Fourth of July

Wow! It's been an incredible weekend here in the W. household. And we still have another day to go!  Yesterday we celebrated Independence Day by having a relaxing morning at home before heading out to Aunt Melissa's for the annual cookout. Midway through the morning Wesley turned to me and said, "You know what my favorite days are, Mom? The days when we have the windows open and Ryan and I are playing and you are baking in the kitchen. I love those days!"  And that was exactly how we spent the morning!

Our annual cookout at Aunt Melissa's was fantastic, as always. Every time I spend the day with Duane's family, I am reminded again how blessed I am to call them my family too.

Melissa, Mark and Kierstin made these adorable (and yummy) pretzel flags

Speaking of adorable, check out Judy's candy creation

I told Ryan he couldn't get into the pool until he ate something. This was him biding his time.

Can't keep Wesley out of the water

LOVE this picture - right about this time, Ryan was getting cold and Wesley was egging him on to get in the water. Ryan said, "My body says "no," but my head says "yes" before jumping in.

Wesley is all about style

Even the fireflies showed up early

This little  bugger hung out with me for a good long time

My wonderful mother in law, and gorgeous sisters in law

My nephew, Mark, made these awesome flag bracelets.
We had a short rest time at home in the evening before Kirk and Susan joined us to head down to the fireworks. We hadn't been to fireworks in a couple of years and the kids were really looking forward to it. It ended up being a really wonderful night.

Down at my old high school, waiting for the fireworks to start.

Ryan brought reading material

Susan and Kirk!

Cannot tell you how much I love this picture!

Random pictures with glow necklaces

"Mom, are these the same fireworks we watched on tv last night?" asked Ryan.
After the fireworks, we did some sparklers in the driveway

Ryan was a little freaked out by the fireworks one of the neighbors was setting off.

Pure happiness
