Save the Cookies!

Our church has a small area for refreshments (cookies and coffee) set up each Sunday. Duane and I have joined the hospitality team and supply cookies for the refreshment table about once a month. Last Sunday we took pumpkin molasses cookies with pumpkin chips. Ryan LOVES that particular kind of cookie and couldn't wait to get to church to have one.

He selected his cookie and spent a very long time taking the tiniest little mouse like nibbles of it, determined to make it last as long as possible. I've never seen a child take so long to eat a cookie.  Part way through the marathon cookie nibbling, Ryan noticed his shoe was untied. Rather than shove his entire cookie in his mouth while he tied he shoe, or asking someone else (who may have eaten the cookie) to hold it, Ryan came up with a rather unique way to assure his cookies would be waiting when the shoe tying was over.

Yes, as the somewhat blurry picture shows, Ryan balanced his cookie on the top of shoe while he took care of getting the shoe retied. Actually, once I got over the slight grossness of the cookie resting on top of the shoe, it occured to me that is was kind of a smart move. The cookie wasn't on the floor. He didn't have to entrust anyone else with his partially eaten prize. He could keep an eye on it AND putting it on his shoe had the same effect as licking it - no one else would want it after that. Way to save the cookie, Ryan!

Skating Away

Last night the boys had a scout outing at the roller skating rink in order to earn their roller skating belt loop.  I have to say, I was pretty impressed with the way the staff ran things. They divided the kids up into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. I don't really think Wesley and Ryan qualified as intermediate since they've only been skating three times, but that's where they put themselves and they seemed to do ok.

The first thing the staff taught the kids was the proper way to fall and get back up. Good lesson! Especially for my kids. Then then worked on a couple of different skate techniques including how to avoid someone who was fallen. They had to complete a little skills course to earn their belt loop and both Wesley and Ryan did well enough to pass. Ryan even wore his scout belt and new belt loop to school today so he could show some of his friends.

Wesley left the skating rink asking if he could please take lessons every week and both boys have asked to add roller skates to their Christmas wish lists. Good thing Santa hasn't done anything about the video game he was going to bring - looks like he'll be bringing skates instead.

Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I was not flattered when a volunteer (and former coworker) took one look at my pink sweater, pink socks, pink iPad case, pink mug and pink earbuds and told me I was "such a girl."

There is no way I am actually the parent that looks forward to parent teacher conference night because it's generally just spent listening to teachers say that my kids are good. That would be obnoxious.

I did not show up for my desk hours at work a full hour early. Who does that on purpose?

I was not so obnoxious, wound up and stressed out during a televised football game that my football loving hubby asked me to knock it off. Didn't happen.

I did not get so sucked into the setting of a book I was reading that I am mentally planning a trip to Maine.

I know I didn't walk around for most of the day wondering why I smelled apples, only to discover that my apple scented hand sanitizer was open (and leaking) in my purse.

Crazy Talk

Ryan has a particular pizza place that he really likes to go to. We pass it on the way to church every week and every week he looks longingly out the window at it and sighs the name of the restaurant.  Today after listening to Ryan's mournful sigh, we started talking about the time we went there on one of the "dinner of your choice" coupons that the Easter Bunny gave him.

"It's getting close to Christmas," I reminded Ryan. "Maybe Santa will talk to the Easter Bunny and get the idea to leave you coupons in your stocking."

"Yeah, right!" Ryan scoffed. "Like that would ever happen!"

So he buys a rabbit leaves him eggs and candy and good stuff on Easter, and he buys that Santa travels around the world filling stockings and leaving gifts under the tree, but he can't fathom these two imaginary (but real to him) beings having a conversation at some point.

Ah, the logic of a six year old.

So Thankful

Look what my dear sweet Wesley gave me today:

Yes, I teared up. And yes, I will keep this and treasure it for always.

Ryanism of the Day

As the boys and I were driving to school this morning, we passed a car that had a bunch of icicles hanging off it, similar to what's shown below.

Car in front, covered with icicles

"Look, Mom! There's a whole gang of icicles hanging out on that car!" Ryan cried.

For some reason that cracked me up. I had this whole "West Side Story" image of icicles hanging out on cars, snapping their fingers and dancing.  Maybe it's just me who found humor in that.

On the upside, now we know what a 6 year old believes a group of icicles is called.

Good Day

Today started off rough with Wesley and I fighting about the need to wear gloves on the way to school. Thank goodness it got better with two great teacher conferences! Wesley's teacher said she wishes she had a whole class just like him and Ryan teacher told us he was a great kid (if only he would stop talking so much.)  We finished the day with Ryan and Duane cutting snowflakes for a Tiger Cub elective, and Wesley and I baking cookies to work on one of his badges. Cookie fueled sweet dreams tonight!

Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I did not drop Ryan off at school one day with a warning not to hit his head or otherwise injure himself at school that day because I was going to be 30 miles away for most of the day and wouldn't be able to go get him at school should he hurt himself.

I did not tell Wesley he could not have any of my Ben & Jerry's ice cream because it was MY ice cream. Surely I am a better example to my children than that.

There is no way that Duane had to have Grandpa pull over to the side of the road so Wesley could pike. That would have been a first in our family.

I know I did not hear Duane tell Wesley to quit fondling the breasts at the grocery store the other night when Wesley was a little too interested in a package of chicken.

I did not walk my first ever 5K then spend part of the afternoon napping on the couch because that kind of laziness would have defeated the purpose of the 5K.

Hot Chocolate 5K

Well, I did it! I walked my first 5K this morning! Even though it was cold enough to be snowing, it was still a lot of fun - especially because of Ann, Molly, Lloyd, Sarah and Hillary!

We met at 6:15 this morning to carpool down to the race. One of our co-workers scored us incredible parking spots so it wasn't quite as painful as it could have been.

See -it really was me!

Yes, I snuggled up to my friend's hubby to help stay warm. It was COLD out!
Heading to the starting line

Me and two of my favorite work partners in crime!

Molly and me

Selfies in our "corral" waiting for the signal to go
My friend Hillary and I kept up 15 minute miles throughout the race - pretty good for me since I am a self proclaimed couch potato. I just really appreciate her walking with me and keeping my pace (and spirit) up! We even sprinted across the finish line just because.

Finish line here we come!

Our finishing prize - a cup of delicious hot chocolate and a bowl of chocolate fondue and yummy things to dip in it

Me and Hillary at the end!
I enjoyed myself enough that I am already to planning to walk another 5K, although probably not until next year. I hope Duane will walk with me because I think it would be fun to do together. I'm never going to be a runner, but I can walk with the best of them!

Cure for the Grumpies

I woke up really cranky this morning. Most of it was because the boys woke up early and were trying to get into the bathroom to brush their teeth while I was still in there getting ready for work. Then they tried to make their breakfast while I was still unloading the dishwasher and there just isn't room for three people in our kitchen. Throw in a fight about which piece of bacon belonged to which child, some assorted fake fart and burp noises at the breakfast table, and enough giggling that Ryan snorted hot chocolate out his nose and I was in full grump mode by 8:10.

But kids have a way of turning things around on you. As I sat on the couch, drinking coffee, and silently stewing about how loud the house was and how grouchy I felt, Ryan came up and gave me a big kiss on the cheek.

As he bounded off towards the stairs he turned to me and said, "I love you so much! Just being around you makes me feel happy."

And just like that the grouchies were gone. I won't say I'm all rainbows and sprinkles, but I sure felt my heart melt and my frown turn into a smile. It was exactly what I needed. Even though I grump sometimes, my kids are my sunshine. It's nice to know that I'm theirs too.

It's Good to Know Your Strengths

One of the things I love about being a parent is experiencing things I loved as a kid again through my own kids. Fireworks, Disney, Santa Claus, and movies I grew up watching. There's just something magical about seeing it through your child's eye.

I'm sitting on the couch with the boys as I type this. We're watching the original Willy Wonks movie together and I'm having an absolute blast. Ryan is a little stressed out by all the things that happen to the bratty kids in the movie, but he still can't tear his eyes away.

Of course, seeing the hero, Charlie, float up into the air when he stole fizzy lifting drink was pretty hard for Ryan to take. He wants to see others do good and obey the rules. But don't worry, Ryan got over any distress he was feeling as soon as Charlie and Grandpa Joe figured they could get down by burping.

"I should have some of that stuff," Ryan told me, "because I am an expert at burping!"

I guess we all have our talents. And I know I can rest easy should Ryan ever stumble across fizzy lifting drink.

Traditions

I often think about the traditions our family has and the traditions we are creating. Maybe it's my slightly type A personality, but I love traditions. There's comfort in knowing that certain things will be done a certain way or at a certain time.

When I look back at my childhood many of my memories center around the traditions my family had. And around food. But aren't certain foods traditions in themselves? Why else do we eat the same thing on holidays? It's tradition.

With the holidays approaching I'm becoming aware of what Wesley and Ryan consider to be some of our family traditions. For the last few years we have gone to Duane's brother's place, along with the rest of Duane's family, to decorate the tree and spend an evening together. However, until this year, I had no idea how much the boys look forward to it.

The other day I mentioned to Wesley and Ryan that we'd be going to Uncle Doug's this weekend to decorate his tree. They could hardly contain their excitement.

"I love doing that! It's the best!"

"We get to listen to Christmas music then! And we always watch Charlie Brown Thanksgiving AND Charlie Brown Christmas"

"And we get to make s'mores! I love it when we go to Uncle Doug's to get ready for Christmas!"

This morning when Wesley woke up the first thing he asked was what day it was.

"It's Wednesday," I told him.

"Oh," he sighed. "I wish it was the weekend so we could go to Uncle Doug's.

Wesley was also very concerned about whether I remembered to get Advent calendars for this year. It's not even Thanksgiving! But yes, I have purchased the calendars. We will be ready for the month of December. Like I said, it's about traditions.

The Blame Game

We are getting ready for our first bout of winter weather later this week.  It was a lovely, sunshiny day in the 60s yesterday, but we're supposed to have highs in the 30s and some snow later this week. Yuck. I'm not ready for snow.

As the boys were getting ready for school yesterday morning, I told them to be sure and enjoy the weather because it was going to get very cold later in the week - cold enough to snow.  In response to this news, Ryan, who claims to love the cold and snow, made one of the angriest faces I have seen him make in a very long time.

"Hey, don't blame me!" I told him. "I can't control the weather."

"Fine! Then I blame the weatherman," Ryan announced.

"Sorry, but he doesn't control the weather either."

"Fine! I'll blame the sky!"

I guess he just needed someone (or something) to blame.

Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I did not get guilt-ed into getting my flu shot by my doctor.  That would have meant surrendering to my 15 year streak of NOT getting a flu shot.

I did not plan what I would have for breakfast after a fasting doctor's appointment a full twelve hours before said appoint was scheduled to take place.

I did not willingly attend (and enjoy) an exercise class. And I certainly don't plan on making it a regular part of my week.

I did not take Wesley with me to the above exercise class so Duane and Ryan could go on an outing for scouts. Even if I did, I know part of me wasn't a little concerned that he's crack up at his mom shaking her stuff to "All About the Bass"

I did not buy Christmas lights two and a half weeks before Thanksgiving just because when we looked for them last year, every store was sold out of the ones we wanted.

Tiger Day

Today Ryan went to his first Cub Scout event that didn't involve his brother. It was a special event just for Tiger Cubs where they had a chance to complete a bunch of electives and earn beads for their uniforms. Ryan got to do a bunch of different things including...

Sewing a button

Playing a game with Dad

Doing a puzzle

Folding and flying a paper airplane

Learning about animals

And not only did he get to learn about them, he got to hold some

Stamping his name on a leather belt buckle

Silly Scout

He also got to race a pre-made Pinewood Derby car - and he won!!

Duane has been really busy with the scout popcorn sale so far this fall, so I'm really glad he and Ryan had a chance to spend some quality time doing a scout event together. And, truth be told, I'm also really glad I didn't have to be the parent who had to go. :-)

Mom's Pizzaria

Wesley was a big fan of the macaroni and cheese pizza at CiCi's Pizza. Unfortunately, all the CiCi's near us closed, leaving Wesley without a place to get his ultimate carb fix.  Luckily, I love to cook and am addicted to Pinterest. Tonight I made homemade mac & cheese pizza for dinner, followed by an iced cinnamon dessert pizza.

Wesley LOVED the mac & cheese pizza. How much? Well, he told me, "I'd wait in line two and a half hours for this!"

That, my friends, is called a successful dinner!

Judging a Book By Its Cover

As one might imagine, I read a lot of books. A lot of books. I average 200 a year if you don't count picture books (which I don't.) So it probably doesn't come as a surprise that you can find at least one book in every room of our house.

This morning in the kitchen, Wesley noticed the book I am currently reading sitting on the counter.

He picked it up and looked at the cover.

"What's this? 'The Young Elis?' 'The Young Elies?' 'The Young Eli-es?'" he wondered out loud.

"It's 'The Young Elites," I called from the dining room

"Nuh-uh!" he answered. "Where's the "T?"

I walked into the kitchen and looked at the cover. "The dagger is the "T."

Wesley took another look at the book. "Well, that's just confusing!" he announced with authority as he returned the book to the counter with a thump.

And as I looked more closely, I could see he was right. Maybe some of the cover designers should run their font and design choices by my nine-year-old. You know, really give them an unbiased opinion.

Talk About Reality TV

I know I have mentioned Ryan's obsession with television commercials in the past. The child is suckered in by any commercial and immediately wants to purchase whatever is being advertised. The other night we saw a commercial for something we happened to own, followed shortly by another commercial for a different product we own.

"Hey!" Ryan shouted while pointing at the tv. "We have that! I guess two things we own are famous!"

Not Me Monday

Welcome to Not Me! Monday! This blog carnival was created by MckMama.

I did not let the kids watch a creepy movie (The Nightmare Before Christmas) only to have my youngest son end up in my bed with nightmares of his own later that night.

I did not get a little territorial when the kids started eating "my" seasonal Pumpkin Pie Pop-Tarts for breakfast instead of the kinds we buy just for them.

I did not make something for the bake sale at school that looked a little like cat poop despite tasting really good.

I did not immediately assume that my child was in trouble when I got a phone call from his teacher one evening. And I know I didn't breathe a little sigh of relief when I discovered the call was just to remind me that I signed up to provide a snack at the Halloween party.

I did not completely flip out and start crying and cussing over a recipe I was making that did not turn out even close to right.

I did not lose sleep the night before wearing my Halloween costume to work because I was worried I wouldn't have time to do the make up properly.

Allergies

Ryan wakes up with a cough most mornings. I really think it's just part of his waking up routine. You know - wake up, pee, cough and sneeze. It's just what he does.

The other morning he came downstairs coughing and sneezing. "Am I allergic to something in our house?" he asked me.

"I don't think so," I told him. "I think it's just how you are when you wake up. What do you think you might be allergic to? We know it's not the cats."

Ryan thought for a moment and answered, "And we know it isn't pizza sauce."

Um....way to rule out the obvious there, kid.

Happy Halloween

I know I should post a nice long, newsy post about Beggar's Night, including tons of pictures, but that isn't going to happen. Nope, instead I'm just going to share something Ryan said to me as we were snuggled on the couch watching "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."

Part way through the show Ryan turned to me, planted a big kiss on my cheek and said, "You're the sweetest treat of all."

I'm telling you, that kid is going to make someone very happy someday.
